The Greater Cleveland Skins Game kicked off its 20th season on Thursday at Fowlers Mill Golf Course.
The race for the Thompson Cup began with 24 players competing under cold but sunny conditions, with firm greens.
It was a fun way to start.
Eddie Neer was the first player to cash in with a pin shot on the par-3 third hole worth $84.
Dave Sotka, 2007 Champion, made a 60-foot eagle putt on the par-5 5th hole to capture the first skin of the season, worth $184.
Defending champion Steve Blackburn Jr., shown here hitting the first shot of the 2010 Skins Game season, also wasted no time getting on the 2010 leaderboard. He hit his second shot on the difficult par-4 sixth hole to one foot and made birdie, collecting $184.
Then Dale Thompson cashed for his first time in the Greater Cleveland Skins game, making a sweeping 20-foot birdie putt at the par-3 7th hole, good for $184.
And Nick Anagnost captured the pin shot on the 7th hole, good for $84.
The fast and firm conditions made hitting it close to the hole difficult, and birdies were scarce. Only one hole was tied with birdies (the short par-4 second hole), while holes 1,3,4,8,9 were open with no birdies at all. And only two players in the 24-man field made par at the par-3 third hole!
Next week, the Greater Cleveland Skins Game moves to Powderhorn GC in Madison, where the course is in great shape and green fees with cart are only $13. All amateurs are welcome to participate!
