“Team Mike” — Mike Simpson and Mike Armour — won the Twin Lakes 2-Man Scramble on Sunday in Kent with style, making a series of sweeping bomb putts whenever they weren’t hitting iron shots so close that they hung on the lip of the hole.
The pair shot a scorching 9-under par score of 61 to win by two shots over three teams.
The highlights of the “Team Mike” scramble round were the near hole-outs from the fairway on three different holes (each time prompting real-chance shouts of ‘GO IN!’), and a series of sweeping, breaking bomb putts — including a truly incredible putt on the par-3 11th hole.
On the second trip through the old-school tilted green of the 2nd hole at Twin Lakes (it’s a 9-hole course played twice from different tees for the scramble), the pair decided to take a putt from the top fringe 25 feet above the hole instead of the swooping downhill/sidehill chip from hole-high right. Armour tapped the team’s first attempt softly and directly at the hole, but the ball ended up 20 feet past the hole down the hill. Simpson realized he couldn’t go at the hole directly, so he turned his back to the cup, and from the fringe putted UP THE FRINGE a couple of inches. The ball just barely crept onto the green and rolled slowly down, building speed as it went. A couple of breaks left, a couple of wiggles right, and the ball found the bottom of the cup — an unbelievable putt that had Armour running around the green and Simpson yelling with his fist in the air.
25 2-man teams participated in the event on Sunday on a great day for golf, with ADGA members earning Golfer of the Year points as an ADGA-recognized event.
There were no skins won outright on the day, so eight teams split the skins pot as four ‘twice tied’ holes fell under the tie-breaker. Complete results below.
