2019 US Mid-Am logoThree spots were available in the 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur Cleveland Qualifier, and three players shot 3-under par 69 to advance.

Brad Wilder of Ft. Wright KY, Kent Monas of Akron, and Chuck Radabaugh of Maumee earned spots in the 39th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which will take place at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, CO and CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, CO on September 14 – 19.

Wilder turned at 33 then added a birdie at the 10th to get to 4-under par on his round, but then hit a rough patch. He made double-bogey on the par-3 12th then bogey on the following 13th to give back most of his early round gains. But a birdie at the 15th and a closing birdie at the par-5 18th pushed him back to 69.

Monas had the hottest front-nine start of any player, turning in a sizzling 5-under par 31 that included an eagle-3 at the par-5 first hole and birdies at the par-4 5th, 7th and 9th. But Monas leaked a little bit of oil with bogies at three of his back-nine par-4 holes, the 11th, 14th and 16th, before closing with a birdie at the 18th to get back to 3-under.

Radabaugh was the most consistent of the three qualifying players, and really made hay at the par-5 holes: an eagle at the first to go along with birdies at the 6th and 18th. A birdie at the short par-4 15th against bogeys at Avon Oaks’ two toughest holes, the long par-4 5th and par-3 8th, rounded out his day.

Chris OkesonOne of Cleveland’s hottest players this season, Chris Okeson of Lyndhurst, had a great chance to earn a spot but instead was left to battle for an alternate position for his third straight USGA qualifier. Sitting at 4-under par for the day with just two holes left to play, Okeson made bogey after a missed up-and-down at the long par-3 8th. Then from the right rough on the tree-filled 9th, he clipped the top of an oak trying to go over with his second, and the ball dropped straight down well short. He followed that with a skinny wedge just over the green and made double-bogey to shoot 71.

In the three-way playoff for alternate positions, Canada’s Derek Dalziel earned the first spot, Bradley Craig of Warren took the second, and Okeson exited quickly after a hooked tee shot ended his chances.
