Record Courier Portage County Amateur ChampionshipsIt as a great day for golf at Sunny Hill Golf Course in Brimfield as golfers teed off in the rain-shortened 12th Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur.

Reduced to a one-day tournament because of a first day rainout, golfers still took to the links enthusiastically competing for trophies and gift certificates as well as bragging rights.

Ultimately, the Junior Amateur had new champions across the board in all six divisions.

BOYS 16 TO 19:

Boys 16 to 19 Champions Cory Gasaway, Mogadore; Owen Hinkle, Loudonville, Gavin Markham, Kent

Owen Hinkle traveled from Loudonville to compete in the event and bested the field of 16-to-19 year old boys, firing a 77 on the Par 71 links of Sunny Hill.

Hinkle, who will be a junior for the Red Birds who compete in the Mid-Buckeye Conference.

Taking second place was Gavin Markham who compete for the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders. Markham fired a 78.

Rounding out the to three was Cory Gasaway, a member of the Mogadore Wildcats varsity golf team. Firing an 80, Gasaway will be back on the links today competing in the Kenny Novak tourney at Club Walden.

Joey Vitali of Warren and Casey Troyer of Kent missed out on the to three by only one stroke, tying with a score of 81.

GIRLS 16 TO 19:

Girls 16 to 19 champions Grace Thompson, Kent; Katie Bice, Louisville; Katie Kulis, Kent

Katie Bice has competed in the Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur before, arriving in Rootstown to visit her grandparents, spending the night and playing in the tournament.

This season, she captured medalist honors.

It wasn’t even close a Bice fired an 81 from the 5,919 yard white tees to best her nearest competitor, Katie Kulis of Kent by 12 strokes.

Kulis, a member of the Kent Roosevelt Lady Rough Riders, fired a 93 with Grace Thompson grabbing third place. Thompson of Kent and headed to play for Walsh College in the Fall, rounded out the top three with a 95 edging out Emma Picicco of Kent by one stroke.

BOYS 13 TO 15:

John Thompson of Avon

It was a long couple days for John Thompson who traveled from Avon on Monday only to have the tournament canceled due to rain at Windmill.

Thompson returned from northern Ohio on Tuesday to fire a 79 at Sunny Hill to earn the championship.

Dillon Pendergast of Mogadore made it a family affair at the Junior Amateur. Pendergast who will play for the Mogadore Wildcats, is the cousin of Cory Gasaway, fired an 81, good for second place.

Cole Hostedler of Ravenna carded a 92, good for third place in the division.

GIRLS 13 TO 15

Girls 13 to 15 Champions Maren Seaholts, Kent; Abigail Retherford Ravenna Isabella Mineo, Kent

Abigail Retherford of Ravenna will have her work cut out for her competing for the Ravens boys team this season.

She demonstrated she is up to the task as she fired an 85 to best Mare Seaholds of Kent by two strokes to win the championship.

Seaholts fired an 87 and Maren’s teammate, Isabella Mineo (also of Kent) carded a 93 to take second and third in he girls 13 to 15 age division.


Adrianne Mineo, Kent; Ashlyn Leavery, Kent; Jude Thiry, Mogadore; Brock Thiry, Mogadore and Jack Mogan North Benton

Jude Thiry played his way around the third nine at Sunny Hill to shoot an outstanding 40 and win the Boys 12 and Under age division.

James Morgan of North Benton and Jude’s brother Brock, took second and third respectively with scores of 43 and 54.

For the girls, it was a Kent girls sweep in the girls 12 and under age division as Ashlyn Leavery fired a 50 on the third nine at Kent to top Adrianne Mineo.


The 2019 Portage County Amateur Championships welcome adults and high school players on the golf courses this weekend as the 89th Portage County Amateur tees off at Windmill Lakes on Saturday and Sugar Bush Golf Course on Sunday.

The rescheduled 5th Portage Kids Am also returns to Sunny Hill after a rain-out canceled the 32 youth from playing this past weekend. The Kids Am plays on Sunday at the course in Brimfield.
