Located in Geauga County, Chardon Lakes Golf Course opened in 1931 with 9 original holes designed by Bert Way (who also designed Firestone North and Mayfield Country Club). In 1963 the ‘new’ nine opened, designed by Don Tincher and Carroll Bazler.
Chardon Lakes features a challenging layout at 6,775 yards: the course record, set by Jack Nicklaus in the 1970s, is still a score of 67.
Chardon Lakes has hosted several Monday qualifiers for professional events like the Cleveland Open, once a stop on the Nationwide Tour. The fact that none of the young guns could break Jack’s record stands as a testament to the challenge of the layout.
Winding through 120 acres of mature trees, rambling creeks and several well-positioned ponds, players will enjoy a classically designed and scenic course. And as challenging as the course is from the tips, several tee box options provide playability for all skill levels.
But even with 43 sand traps and water in play on 11 of the 18 holes, the golf course’s most talked about feature is still the large, sloping, quick greens.
