The First Tee of Cleveland will host the 8th annual Grit, Gratitude & You Breakfast on Friday, November 22 at Windows on the River, 2000 Sycamore Street, on the west bank of the Flats in downtown Cleveland.
The mission of the non-profit organization is to positively impact the lives of local youth ages 6 to 18 by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.
A celebration of The First Tee of Cleveland’s positive impact along with the achievements of its participants, the breakfast will include:
• Presentation of The Del de Windt Leadership Award for Civic Engagement to Rick Buoncore, Managing Partner of MAI Capital Management LLC and the first Board Chair of The First Tee of Cleveland
• Keynote speaker June Ryan (pictured), Rear Admiral, U.S. Coast Guard, Retired. June is a dynamic trainer, speaker, author and coach.
• The Doris A. Evans, M.D. Merit Scholarship presented to First Tee participant Kate Hickey.
With its main campus at Washington Golf Course in Newburgh Heights, The First Tee of Cleveland also delivers programs at Briardale Greens Golf Course in Euclid, Meadowood Golf Course in Westlake, and Grantwood Golf Course in Solon.
The First Tee of Cleveland serves participants through green grass programs, outreach programs in elementary schools and through partnerships with youth agencies across Northeast Ohio. The organization will serve more than 1,700 participants in 2019. Independent research has shown the curriculum has a positive impact on the participants’ grades, self-confidence and social responsibility.
Proceeds from the event will enable The First Tee of Cleveland to extend its reach to more youth in need of social and emotional skills throughout Northeast Ohio.
Co-chairs of the 2019 breakfast are Heather Schmidt and Daryl Deckard. Registration opens at 7:00 a.m., the breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m., and the program takes place 8:00-9:00 a.m. Tickets are $125 per person. Sponsorships opportunities are available.

About The First Tee of Cleveland
The First Tee of Cleveland is a Chapter of The First Tee, a national initiative begun in 1997, which builds character, instills life values and promotes healthy choices for young people ages 6-18 through the game of golf. Efforts to establish a The First Tee chapter in Cleveland began in 1999, and in 2000 the Chapter was officially recognized and secured its 501(c)(3) status. In 2017, 932 young people participated in programs led by The First Tee’s staff of six and more than 100 trained volunteers. The organization’s main campus, Washington Golf Course in Newburgh Heights, features a nine-hole golf course operated by Cleveland Metroparks with the programming under The First Tee of Cleveland’s direction.
