With almost no wind and relatively straight-forward hole locations, a 2-over par aggregate team score of 74 was all it took to get the job done and tie for first place on the evening.

Yes the rough was a bit thick, and yes the greens still aren’t 100%, but the course was there for the taking.

The teams of Dave Oates / Nick Lambos and Rick Bryson / Ryan Maxwell played well enough to take advantage of the opportunity,tying for first place on the evening to get their names well up on to the 2012 League Standings list.

Three skins were won from the $1,000 pot; one of those skins was earned by the Bryson/Maxwell team, making them the big winners on the evening!

In their meeting Monday night, the Aurora City Council approved an agreement to use Ohio EPA taxpayer funds to give a whopping $3.9 million to current Aurora Golf Club owner Hunter Banbury, so together they can shut down the golf course and turn it into a park and river restoration project.

Even with the inflated $3.9 million dollar purchase price, Banbury still retains ownership of the 10 commercially-zoned acres around the clubhouse and its main buildings — a sweetheart deal by any definition. Banbury paid $2.5 million for the entire property in 2007.

So what, if anything, can still be done?

The total cost of the deal is $4.521 million (with the additional funds over the purchase amount used for watershed restoration), and must still be ‘approved’ by the Ohio EPA. But since the Ohio EPA is the agency who pushed for the project and are the funding source for it, that pending approval process appears to be a sham strictly for public show.

The only recourse now is to contact Governor John Kasich and the Ohio EPA to point out the inherent waste of taxpayer dollars in such a transaction, and to write letters to state and federal representatives and local newspapers to put pressure on the proceedings.

They shot a score that no one in the field would have predicted as the winning total before play began, maximizing every opportunity they had.

On a golf course with firm greens and difficult hole locations set near every edge and ridge that Charlie Mozingo could find, the pair shot a blazing 13-under par score of 58.

How ‘maximized’ was their round?

- Six birdies on the front nine for a score of 30, five birdies and an eagle on the back nine and a score 28;

- A bogey-free performance in which they won by two;

- On the drivable 14th hole, their closest tee shot was past the hole on the upper shelf with the pin set just below the ridge, leaving a shot almost impossible to get close. So they decided to take the ball short of the green in the fairway for an uphill chip. They promptly holed out the pitch shot;

- On the really difficult par-3 15th hole, they missed the green and left themselves a somewhat substantial putt for par from the edge of the rough. Just when it looked like the pair might make their first bogey of the day, they holed the putt from off the green.

It was a record-setting performance of which the pair should be proud.

Finishing in second place was the team of Lenton and Heim with a great score of 11-under par 60. Usually, such a score wins in a walk.

Dave Sotka and Nick Anagnost finished in third place at 10-under par, matching the sizzling back nine score of 28 by the winners.

For as great as those three teams played to earn the top spots, the way the results of the big skins game unfolded is more a story of unbelievable ‘good fortune’. Bob Burkheimer and partner Karim were last minute walk-up entries to the event on Saturday. On the par-4 5th hole, Burkheimer’s tee shot bounced untouched through the pine trees on the right and finished in the fringe pin high. With a swooping right-to-left putt from about 22 feet, Burkheimer putted first for the team and missed about 3 feet too high and past the hole. The ball stopped momentarily then started slowly creeping down the hill. You guessed it: the missed putt ended up in the bottom of the cup. More amazingly, even though the hole played a mere 275-yards, no other team eagled it. When Tim Davis’ team, playing as the last group of the day, chipped in for eagle on the par-5 16th hole to squash the only other skin outstanding (owned up to that point by Jeff Barbas and Joe Tornabene), Burkheimer and Karim won the entire skins pot: a whopping $1,280. Makes for a pretty happy last-minute decision to play, and some ‘good fortune’.

Thanks to Tim Davis, Charlie Mozingo and the rest of the staff at Turkeyfoot for another great spring scramble, as always. The golf course was in great condition and the field was a whopping 65 teams, showing that scratch tournament golf in Northeast Ohio is making a true resurgence.

It was “old timers” night at Powderhorn Golf Course in Madison, and the seniors showed the young boys how to get the winning done.

Carl “Unc” Quercioli of Munson Township, who finished fourth on last year’s Leaderboard with a four-figure winnings total, captured the only skin on the night — and with it a giant payday.

Unc’s birdie on the 158-yard par-3 5th hole was worth a whopping haul of $482!

Another senior, Geoff Nicely took home the pin shot on that same 5th hole, hitting it 5-feet away. But Nicely missed the putt, allowing “Unc” to be all smiles when he came into the clubhouse to learn of his good fortune. Nicely earned $63 for the pin shot.

(Both Nicely and “Unc” play in the “over 55″ category, where the rules permit senior players to hit from the white tees. But the advantage did not make any difference in today’s round, as all players hit from the blue tees on the par three holes each week.)

The other winner on the night was Erron Gomez, who was the only player in the 21-man field to hit the green on the par-3 205 yard 8th hole. Gomez took the Mulligan’s Pin Shot on that hole, worth $84.

Holes #1, 3, 6, 8, and 9 went without a birdie made — a pretty large number for 21 players.

The greens rolled true and the course was in excellent shape, and the Skins Game thanks Powderhorn for the great green fee rate offered.

Mark Borlin still holds the top spot on the 2012 Leaderboard, but “Unc” and the rest of the field is in hot pursuit of Borlin as we head to week 5 next Thursday at Tanglewood National G.C starting at 5 p.m.
