Tom Bohardt of Concord Township and Richard Marlowe of Youngstown each posted 1-under par 70 at Acacia Country Club on Monday to qualify for the United States Senior Amateur Championship at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas September 20 - 25.

Ben Cavey of Wadsworth and Daniel Metzendorf of Strongsville earned their way to the 2008 United States Mid-Amateur Championship by posting the low rounds of the day at the regional qualifier, a one-over par 73 at the challenging Lake Forest CC in Hudson today.

Four players followed with 74: Brian Sparrow of Chagrin Falls; David Brown of Pittsburgh; Eugene O’Byrne of Massillon; and Mark Telerico of Aurora. In a playoff for the remaining two spots, Sparrow and Brown earned their way into the championship field, and O’Byrne and Telerico are alternates.

The 2008 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship will be held at Milwaukee Country Club in River Hills, Wisconsin on September 6 - 11.

Brad Wright of Cambridge won the 2008 Ohio Publinx at Cooks Creek GC in Ashville, Ohio, August 5th - 8th, with a 72-hole total of 278. Complete scores are posted here on the OPGA website.

Four local guys beat back a slew of players from across the state — and several other states plus Canada, too — to earn spots in the United States Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Golf Club, August 18-24.

Ross Beal of Uniontown fired a sizzling 6-under par to take medalist honors for the 36 holes, which was split between Fowlers Mill GC and Legend Lake CC. Jeff Malette of Canton posted a solid 2-under par to finish second. Three players tied for third at even par, forcing a playoff for the final two spots, which was won by Mac McLaughlin of Shaker Heights and Zach Glassman of Highland Heights.

Local pro Walt Robertson qualified yesterday to play in the 2008 U.S. Senior Open at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs on July 31 - August 3.

Robertson shot 3-under par 69 in the Michigan sectional qualifier to be one of only two players to earn a berth from that event.

David Ludlow of Burton was the medalist, and Craig Voorhees of Burton won a playoff for second place to earn the two spots available from the 2008 U.S. Public Links Championship sectional qualifier, held at Windmill Lakes GC in Ravenna. They will compete in the U.S. Publinx at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, CO July 14-19.

The local qualifier for the 2008 Ohio Amateur Championship was held Tuesday, May 27 at Elyria Country Club. Dan Rush of Avon grabbed medalist honors with a smooth 3-under par 69, winning by two shots over Ben Cavey of Wadsworth and Zach Glassman of Highland Heights.

A score of 76 was needed to advance to the tournament proper, to be held at Findlay Country Club July 15-18.

The deadline to apply for entry into the 2008 Ohio Amateur is this Friday, May 16 by 4:00 p.m.

The local qualifier will be held at Elyria Country Club on Tuesday, May 27th, with the tournament proper to be held at Findlay Country Club on July 14 - 18.
