With almost no wind and relatively straight-forward hole locations, a 2-over par aggregate team score of 74 was all it took to get the job done and tie for first place on the evening.

Yes the rough was a bit thick, and yes the greens still aren’t 100%, but the course was there for the taking.

The teams of Dave Oates / Nick Lambos and Rick Bryson / Ryan Maxwell played well enough to take advantage of the opportunity,tying for first place on the evening to get their names well up on to the 2012 League Standings list.

Three skins were won from the $1,000 pot; one of those skins was earned by the Bryson/Maxwell team, making them the big winners on the evening!

The entry fees paid in for Week 2 will carry-over; both the skins pot and the cash game from this washed-out week will be added in to the event next week Monday, May 14th. That means double-prize amounts from all three games will be riding next Monday! (Players who did not compete in the Week 2 event will have to pay double entry fees for Week 3 to participate.)

The league format for next Monday, May 14th: Combined Aggregate Score played on the back nine. Should be interesting…

The level of golf played on the first week of the 2012 league season backs up that statement.

The team of Dave Oates and Sam Spino made EIGHT birdies in nine holes on a breezy day with some truly tough hole locations. Offset by a lone bogey, the pair shot a 7-under par 29 on the lengthened back nine at Chippewa to win the first event of the season by two shots.

Spino and Oates also nabbed half the skins pot with their birdie on the 14th hole, splitting the skins with the eagle made on the 10th hole by Quinn Parker and Mark Thomas, good for $280 per team.

Should be another season of high-quality team golf at Chippewa in 2012. Practice hard and bring the A-game…

Let’s see: a team victory and three skins from a carry-over pot at Rosemont; yup, that qualifies as a really big final night…

John Kabasky and Howard Weaver posted a solid 3-under par score of 55 to beat the aformentioned Jim Cea and partner Ronny Bell by two shots in the 12-hole jumble format at Rosemont Country Club on Monday.

Cea and Bell’s 1-under par second-place effort certainly was a good one, especially given Cea’s position for year going into the final event. And in most circumstances, that second-place finish by Cea would have been good enough to keep hold of the year-long title.

But in addition to the overall win, Kabasky and Weaver also grabbed an astounding three of the six skins won on the evening — from a carry-over pot, no less — netting them a total of $920 from their scramble / better ball / aggregate / alternate shot effort.

Kabasky’s take of $460 for the night against Cea’s $50 share of the second place prize moved Kabasky to the top of the Monday Night League Standings — by a mere $17.25! An incredible way to win a season-long championship.

Weaver ended up in third position on the 2011 standings with his share of the big Rosemont haul, just $34.75 behind Cea for the year.

A total of $17,036.70 was won by all players on the season.

Tim Davis earned shot-of-the-night honors when he holed his second from the fairway on the par-4 5th hole — causing his partner Kevin Larizza to whoop it up enough for the customers at the Giant Eagle to hear.

FINAL 2011 CHIPPEWA MONDAY SCRATCH LEAGUE STANDINGS

The Chippewa Scratch League has been CANCELED once again for tonight, Monday, October 3rd due to wet conditions. Hopefully next week…

League play will resume again next week Monday — with a big CARRY-OVER SKINS POT in play!

And since no skins were won on the evening, the skins money carries over to next week — making for an interesting September finish to the 2011 race.

Standings leader Jim Cea and partner Dave Pulk jumped off hot on Monday, making birdie-eagle on the starting par-fives. A win by Cea could have sealed the standings race. But the pair did not finish as well as they started even though the Senior tees were left in their everyday-play ‘up’ positions. That was a huge break for the rest of the field field, as some of the Senior tees were 75 yards up from the back tee positions (which truly needs to be addressed).

Hot-putting Jason Chadima and partner Mike Armour could have joined Kracker and Mallette in the winner’s circle on Monday, save for a missed 6-foot par putt that resulted in bogey on 16.

The win by Kracker and Mallette simply adds to the list of potential teams who could pull off a last-minute September season standings win. If the big skins pot next week is won by just one team who also pulls off a victory, that could put a new leader at the top of the 2011 standings…

Skins: CARRY OVER !!!!

But the red-hot duo of Mike Simpson and Jim Krivanek are right on Cea’s heels.

The Cea/Pulk team and the Simpson/Krivanek team tied for first place at Rosemont Monday in the 12-hole 3/3/3/3 format (scramble, better ball, aggregate, alternate shot), with each team earning $285 on the evening for their 4-under par scores.

That puts Cea into the lead at just under $975 on the season, while Simpson/Krivanek’s back-to-back winning finishes vault them into T-3 with just over $700 each for the year.

Chris Okeson sits alone in second place, with Okeson’s partner Rob Schustrich in fifth (shouldn’t have taken that week off, Rob).

David Trier and partner Tom Markham made a big jump as Trier holed out his third shot at the par-5 18th from 50 yards to nab the only skin on the evening, worth $560. That’s a boost up the board, too.

With the close bunching of players and just a few more weeks to go, the top spot on the 2011 Chippewa League Standings is still up for grabs. Should be fun!

Note that there is no league play next Monday, September 5th because of the Labor Day holiday. League will resume Monday, September 12th.
