Steven, Brick 2011 NOGA Players of the Year

The Northern Ohio Golf Association announced today that Brad Steven of Quail Hollow Country Club and Norton Brick of Oberlin CC are the 2011 NOGA Players of the Year in the regular and senior divisions respectively.

Brad Steven earned has first NOGA Player of the Year title after finishing in the top 10 in three of the past four years, including fourth the past two seasons. Following a victory in the season-opening Stroke Play Championship, he finished third in the 72-hole Northeast Ohio Amateur. He also led his Quail Hollow Country Club team to its second Interclub Team Match Play title in the past three years.

Norton Brick was a model of consistency on his way to capturing his first NOGA Senior Player of Year award. In his first year as a member of Oberlin Golf Club, Brick won the POY title in the last event of the season by overtaking his Four-Ball partner and NOGA Hall of Famer Larry Nagy with a second-place finish in the Seniors West Championship at Oberlin. He posted three victories (Four-Ball, Four-Ball Match Play and Seniors East) and two runner-up finishes (Northeast Ohio Amateur and Seniors West).

Steven and Brick will be honored at the upcoming NOGA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday, October 14 at Acacia Country Club.

Mac McLaughlin of Shaker Heights won the 2011 Northeast Ohio Amateur by three shots over Zach Glassman of Highland Heights in the main division, while Jim Harless of Aurora took the top spot in the Senior Division after a three hole playoff with Norton Brick of Elyria.

Larry Nagy to Enter NOGA Hall of Fame

Oberlin Golf Club standout and all-around great guy Larry Nagy will be inducted into the Northern Ohio Golf Association’s Hall of Fame on October 8th at Kirtland Country Club. Nagy has won 11 Oberlin Golf Club championships, the 1997 Northeast Ohio Amateur, and qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship three times in consecutive years.

Nagy will be joined by Ellsworth H. Augustus and Jim Hilderbrand as 2010 inductees. Details on these men and information on attending the induction ceremony can be found on NOGA’s website.

Furlong, Brick Cruise to NEO Am Titles

John Furlong and Norton Brick cruised to their respective Championship and Senior titles in the 2010 Northeast Ohio Amateur Invitational on Monday, in the 80th playing of this long running event presented by the Northern Ohio Golf Association.

Furlong, a Medina resident and an incoming senior at Kent State, shot 2-under 70 at the Country Club of Hudson to win the Championship division by four shots over Mac McLaughlin. The scheduled 36-hole finish on Monday was reduced to just 18 holes due to early rain.

Brick posted a 2-over 74 to win his first Senior division crown of the Northeast by a whopping seven shots. Brick is the first player ever to win both divisions of the Northeast Ohio Am.

Furlong Nabs Top Spot After 2 Rounds at NEO Am

Kent State player John Furlong of Medina posted an even-par 71 at Aurora on Wednesday to jump into first place after two rounds of the 2010 Northeast Ohio Amateur Invitational presented by the Northern Ohio Golf Association.

Combined with his first round score of 1-under par 70 at Quail Hollow on Monday, Furlong sits two shots ahead of Mac McLaughlin (who posted the day’s best round at Aurora with a 2-under par 69) and three in front of first-round leader Rob Schustrich.

In the Senior Division, Norton Brick of Elyria followed up his first round score of 70 at Quail Hollow with a 1-over par 72 at Aurora to hold the 36 hole lead by four shots over Jeff Knox.

The final 36 holes will be played this Monday at the Country Club of Hudson (18 holes only for the Senior Division).

Shustrich, Brick Lead Round 1 at NEO Am

The 80th edition of the Northeast Ohio Amateur Invitational got off to a fast start with some excellent play at Quail Hollow Country Club’s Weiskopf-Morrish Course in Concord on Monday.

Rob Schustrich began his round with three early bogeys but finished with five birdies for a tournament-leading score of 2-under par 69. Jonathan Riemer and John Furlong are tied for second with rounds of 70.

Norton Brick leads the Senior Division with a score of 1-under par 70, followed by the 2008 champion Jeffrey Knox with 72 and Joe Roller with 73.

Latimer Romps to 15-Shot NEO Am Win

Nick Latimer of Kent posted scorching rounds of 68-67 at Lakewood CC on Monday to romp to a 15-shot win in the 2009 Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship conducted by the Northern Ohio Golf Association. Latimer’s 72-hole score for the event was a sizzling 10-under par.

In the Senior Division, Doug Van Nostran put up a three-birdie back nine comeback to squeak out a one-shot victory over past NEO Am champ Norton Brick.

Latimer Goes Up 3 Shots in NEO Am

Nick Latimer posted a 2-under par 70 at Oberlin CC on Wednesday in the second round of the 2009 Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship to take a 3-shot lead over Chris Minear and Saumil Jhaveri heading in to the 36 hole final at Lakewood CC on Monday.

On the senior side, Norton Brick of Elyria posted an even-par round of 72 to take the lead by two over Doug Van Nostran.

Minear and Latimer Take NEO Am Round 1 Lead

Chris Minear and Nick Latimer each posted a 2-under par 70 at Lake Forest Country Club in Hudson on Monday to share the lead after the first round of the 2009 Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship.

The pair leads Mark Telerico’s 1-under par 71 by one, while Brad Stevens posted an even par round of 72.

In the Senior Division, Mike Crider shot 1-over par 73 to lead.
