The pair posted a 7-under par score of 65, shooting 4-under par in the scramble and 3-under par in the better ball.

Five teams tied for second place at 4-under par 68, and the tie-breaker outlined below was used to determine final positions and merchandise certificates.

Absolutely perfect weather conditions greeted the players at Manakiki on Saturday, and the scores reflect those conditions. The team of Joe Mannix and Shane Ash shot a 10-under par score of 62 to win by a shot. Joe Mannix also was part of the team that won the first event of the year as well at Sleepy Hollow.

Some familiar names were part of the winning team at the 2012 Sleepy Hollow 4-Player Scramble, the first event of the Cleveland Metroparks Spring Tour tournament season.

The team of Joe Mannix, Brad Poe, Dave Stover and Bill Randorf posted 12-under par 59 and won the back-nine score tie-breaker to capture first place.

Also shooting a score of 59 were the teams of Mark Hubert, Doug Hubert, Dan Metzendorf and Chris Davis, who finished second by scorecard playoff, and the team of Steve Tischler, Brian Tischler, Joe Denk and Will Schwartz who finished third by the card.

18 teams competed in the tournament.

Poe, Stover and Randorf were previously on team that finished first at the Sleepy Hollow 4-Man Scramble in 1994, second in 1996, first in 1997, fourth in 2000, third in 2002 and third in 2007. Joe Mannix was on a different team that won in 2010 and 2011.

This was first event of the year where players earned points in the season-long Cleveland Metroparks Bonus Pool and Golfer of the Year Standings. That standings list is posted below.

The next Cleveland Metroparks Spring Tour event is the 2-Player Scramble at Manakiki GC in Willoughby Hills next Saturday.

2012 Cleveland Metroparks Bonus Pool and Golfer of the Year Standings

- The Akron District Golf Association kicks off their 2012 season with the Parke H. Thornton 2-Man Better Ball at Turkeyfoot this Saturday, May 5th. There are already 50 teams registered and the entry deadline is Wednesday, May 2 at 10 pm, so the field will be full-sized and highly-competitive. Should be a shoot-out;

- The Cleveland Metroparks Golf Division also gets rolling this coming Saturday with their 2012 Spring Tour, starting with the 4-M Scramble at Sleepy Hollow. The signup deadline passed last Sunday, but you might still call John Fiander at Sleepy Hollow and beg for entry if you want to play;

- And finally, this Sunday, May 6th, the Pine Hills Spring 3-M Cash Scramble will be played once again in Hinckley. Should be a big, strong pro-am field for that one, so get your entry in today.

Starting with the Spring Tour and continuing on through our major summer tournaments and into the Fall Tour events, all players finishing in the top 10 of each event will be awarded points. Points awarded in each event will be proportioned based on the format: players earning points in individual stroke events will be awarded the most points, while players earning points in team events will receive less.

Points will be awarded at the following Cleveland Metroparks golf events:

* Spring Tour – 4-Person Scramble, 2-Player Scramble, 2-Player Scramble/Better Ball, Women’s Scramble

* Summer Stroke Play Series – Course Championships, Greater Cleveland Amateur, Senior Greater Cleveland Amateur, Women’s Greater Cleveland Amateur

* Fall Tour – 2-Player Scramble, Bill Barbour Cup, Tour Championship

Manakiki Golf Course in Willoughby Hills will be the site of the season ending Tour Championship. Anyone who has earned points during the season will be eligible to play in this event. It will be the final chance for players to earn points and be awarded a Bonus Pool payout, which will go to the top 10 points earners. The pool payout amount will be based on the total participation in all of the above events.

The estimated first place payout is $450, including a trophy and an exemption into the 2013 Greater Cleveland Amateur. Payouts will be in the form of Cleveland Metroparks gift cards. If tournament participation increases, the projected payout will be increased.

Point standing updates will be posted on the Metroparks golf webpage and on Northeast Ohio Golf. Players will receive direct e-mail updates as well.

Flyers posted at each course will provide complete information on this brand new season-long bonus pool.

Water covers the entire 9th green and a river runs down the fairway at Sleepy Hollow on Sunday

As the leaders made the turn on Sunday, it started to sprinkle again.

As the players reached the 10th green, some lightning flashed. Then came the rain. Lots of rain.

After nearly two hours of a strong, steady downpour, tournament directors Mike Raby and John Fiander determined that too much of the golf course would remain under water for the remainder of the day, so third round play was wiped out and the results after 36 holes would stand.

That meant a playoff between round one leader Andrew Bailey of Rocky River and Sleepy Hollow’s newly crowned course champion Pete Skirpstas of Medina would decide the 2011 Cleveland Am.

The rain ended the chances of the playoff roster being even larger — or perhaps crowning a different champion all together — as the top of the leaderboard was tightly packed with just eight holes to go. Skirpstas turned at 1-under par 34 and led Bailey and 3-time Cleveland Am champion Brad Steven going into the back nine by just two shots.

But Steven had birdied the ninth hole by nearly holing his second and followed that up with a birdie at 10 to create some momentum, while Skirpstas made bogey at the 10th for a two shot swing.

Unfortunately, that’s when the skies opened so the finish could not be completed.

Raby and Fiander made the call to revert to the 36-hole scores at 3 p.m.

At 3:20 p.m., the water had receded just enough on the 18th green that a playoff could be started. Skirpstas hit his tee shot into the right rough, while Bailey found the fairway.

Skirpstas cut a gap wedge around the huge tree in the right rough to a spot on the green below and left of the hole, leaving about 18 feet up the hill with a big left-to-right sweep.

So Bailey had an opening, and he took advantage. He hit his own wedge shot to about 12 feet dead above the hole; with the green being wet, he was in great position for his birdie run.

Skirpstas hit a solid putt that cruised just past the low side of the hole, leaving himself an 18-inch tap-in which he finished up.

That set the stage for Bailey to win the playoff.

Bailey read the putt carefully with his caddie, stroked the downhill putt — and it simply stopped. Some excess water between his ball and the hole left him halfway home. Earlier in the day, that same putt would have been dangerously fast.

Bailey was now faced with a downhill six footer just to tie, which he failed to convert by sending it just right of the hole. It was an extremely disappointing ending to the day for the 2011 Big Met course champion.

With the playoff victory, Skirpstas becomes the first Cleveland Amateur champion who is also the reigning course champion from the same site, as he won the qualifier at Sleepy Hollow two weeks previous.

A big thank you to Cleveland Metroparks golf professionals Mike Raby and John Fiander for their fantastic work throughout the tournament, and a big congratulations to Sleepy Hollow course superintendent Chad Lewanski who has done a fantastic job in bringing this challenging golf course back to tournament quality.

Pete Skirpstas takes a run at birdie on his final hole of the day, the 9th at Sleepy Hollow.

Two weeks ago, Pete Skirpstas of Medina shot rounds of 69-68 to win the Sleepy Hollow Course Championship and Cleveland Am qualifier, setting a new scoring record for that event.

On Saturday, Skirpstas posted a 2-under par 69 — which included a holed wedge from the right rough at the par-4 fifth hole for eagle-2 — to take a share of the top spot with first round leader Andrew Bailey of Rocky River after two rounds of the 2011 Greater Cleveland Amateur Golf Championship.

Bailey could have had the 36-hole lead alone, but suffered a three putt from the top edge of the ninth green, his last (above). Skirpstas and Bailey stand at even par 142.

Three time champion Brad Steven of Concord matched Skirpstas’ score with a 69 of his own, and sits tied for third place with Zach Glassman of Highland Heights and Matt Heestand of Cleveland at a 143 total.

The event’s only other three-time champ, Norton Brick of Elyria, is one shot behind that, setting up a great shootout for Sunday’s final round.

Bill Schaefer posted the low round of the day with a 68.
