Sure, trophies are great. But winning hugs from the family are even better!

But Steven’s win wasn’t without some big drama, provided primarily by a hot-putting Doug Barber who shot lights-out early. [Read more →]

But with a slightly friendlier golf course setup on this second day of play, a handful of guys posted under par rounds to put some heat on Sotka. [Read more →]

Nick Latimer Victorious in Cleveland Amateur
by Allen Freeman | August 9, 2009 No Comments
Nick Latimer of Brooklyn closed out a record-setting performance at the 2009 Greater Cleveland Amateur Golf Championship at Sleepy Hollow, shooting an even-par 71 final round on Sunday for a 54-hole total of 9-under par.
Latimer birdied three of the first four holes Sunday, eliminating any doubt as to whether or not another player might mount a final round charge. A double-bogey at 12 was the only real misstep over the course of three days, but an off-setting birdie and bogey over the final six holes locked up the lop-sided victory.
Defending champion Kyle Cobb of Strongsville posted a solid 71 on Sunday and an even par 213 over the 54 holes to finish second to Latimer.
A special thanks and congratulations to John Fiander, Mike Raby and all of the Cleveland Metroparks golf professionals. The course championships and the Cleveland Amateur have become one of the top golf events in Northeast Ohio each summer, and the level of play in the last few stagings reflects the quality of the event management. Also congratulations to Sleepy Hollow’s grounds staff for the fine conditions over the weekend. [Read more →]
Latimer Pours It On at Cleveland Am
by Allen Freeman | August 8, 2009 No Comments
Nick Latimer of Brooklyn continued to shine on Saturday, shooting a 4-under par 67 in the intermittent rain to post a 36-hole total of 9-under par 133 after two rounds of the 2009 Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Brecksville.
Latimer leads by a whopping seven shots over Doug Barber, who stands at a normally strong 2-under par 140. Latimer’s 9-under par total shatters all 36-hole scoring records for the tournament, and shows how dominant he has been over the course of this summer in amateur golf in the Northeast Ohio area. Latimer Goes Low in Cleveland Am First Round
by Allen Freeman | August 7, 2009 No Comments
Nick Latimer of Brooklyn continued to show a hot hand as he went low at Sleepy Hollow on Friday, posting a sizzling 5-under par 66 to take a two shot lead after the first round of the 2009 Greater Cleveland Amateur Golf Championship.
Latimer, who on Tuesday was the medalist at the regional U.S. Amateur qualifier, holds a two shot lead over Pete Skirpstas of Medina, who posted a solid 3-under par 68. In all, 10 players shot par or better.
The second round continues tomorrow; starting times here.
SKINS GAME: Monty Guest made the only birdie on the par-4 third hole — and then for good measure holed out from the fairway for eagle on the par-4 18th — to claim Friday’s entire skins pot, good for $530.
