Brian Smith of Amherst posted a 3-under par 69 to beat a field of nine players in the Championship Golf Association event played at Bunker Hill Saturday.

CGA Cancels Saturday’s Tanglewood Event

Championship Golf Association Director Jeff Jenkins announced at noon today that this Saturday’s stroke play tournament at Tanglewood National Golf Club in Chagrin Falls has been canceled, as only 12 players registered even after an extension of the entry deadline.

This is the second consecutive event that the CGA dropped due to low player numbers; last Sunday’s scheduled event at Legends of Massillon was also called off.

The next event on the CGA schedule is at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna on Saturday, June 18th. But the Windmill event is scheduled for the same day as the highly popular Ungvary Memorial 2-M Jumble at Good Park, which may make it difficult to attract players.

An immediate response was not received from Jenkins regarding the rest of the season.

CGA Cancels Legends of Massillon Event

Jeff Jenkins has canceled this coming Sunday’s (May 15th) Championship Golf Association event at the Legends of Massillon GC due to a lack of player registrations. The next event on the CGA schedule is Saturday, May 28th at Tanglewood National in Bainbridge. To enter, visit the CGA website.

Thomas Best Survives CGA Pine Hills

Mark Thomas of Canton survived windy and wet conditions — but good greens and no rain! — to win Sunday’s Championship Golf Association event at Pine Hills Golf Course in Hinckley.

Thomas’ score of 77 allowed him to squeak past Kory Oslie of Ashland for a one-shot victory in a field of 19 players.

The next CGA event will be played at the Legends of Massillon on May 15th; entries close next Monday so sign up by the deadline on the website.

CGA to Streamline in 2011

Streamline is the word for 2011! The Championship Golf Association is reducing its tournament schedule in 2011 in order to eliminate many of the conflicts with other tournament dates. With tournaments scheduled no closer than every two weeks, the CGA expects to improve participation and competition.

The CGA Tour is also streamlining its competition, with the elimination of the A flight; all entrants will compete at scratch in one division, with all events played as individual stroke play tournaments.

Membership will be the same as last year: a payment of $5 on an event-by-event basis, the tournament entry fee of $25, and an optional skins game entry of $10 will remain the same. Green fees and cart fees are paid directly to the golf course.

Early entries will now close the Monday prior to the event. The starting times will be set and posted to the website on Tuesday; a minimum of 15 players must sign up or that event will be cancelled. After Monday’s deadline, any openings will only be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

A late registration fee of $10, threatened in the past, will be enforced in 2011.

We will be playing many of the same great courses that the CGA has used in the past: Windmill Lakes, Pine Hills, and Chippewa. We will also be visiting new additions to the roster like the Legends of Massillon, Bunker Hill, the resurgent Tanglewood CC and Red Tail.

Brick Takes CGA Event at Sweetbriar

Five players stood at or near par with a shot at victory on the final hole of the Championship Golf Association stroke play tournament at The Legacy at Sweetbriar on Sunday. But Norton Brick was the only player of the five to make a four on the 18th to earn the win.

CGA Cancels Quail Hollow Event

Even though there was no competing event scheduled, the Championship Golf Association has canceled its stroke play tournament at Quail Hollow this Sunday, July 11th due to a lack of entries.

The cancellation comes after a low number of entries the previous two weeks: 14 players at Windmill Lakes and 13 players at Legends of Massillon.

Director Jeff Jenkins said that the next scheduled CGA event will be played at Sweetbriar Golf Course in Avon on Sunday, July 18th.

Foss Wins CGA Event at Legends

Mark Foss made it clear that he wanted to win a CGA event to gain an exemption into the 2010 Cleveland Amateur. Now he has his 2010 victory, but he must push on to see if he finishes in the top five on the CGA money list on July 15th, the only exemption available to the CGA.

Foss shot 74 at The Legends of Massillon to earn his first victory on the CGA season, beating Mike Kracker by a shot in a field of just 14 players. Foss currently sits in eighth place on the money list with one event to go before exemptions are determined.
