Brick Takes CGA Event at Sweetbriar

Five players stood at or near par with a shot at victory on the final hole of the Championship Golf Association stroke play tournament at The Legacy at Sweetbriar on Sunday. But Norton Brick was the only player of the five to make a four on the 18th to earn the win.

CGA Cancels Quail Hollow Event

Even though there was no competing event scheduled, the Championship Golf Association has canceled its stroke play tournament at Quail Hollow this Sunday, July 11th due to a lack of entries.

The cancellation comes after a low number of entries the previous two weeks: 14 players at Windmill Lakes and 13 players at Legends of Massillon.

Director Jeff Jenkins said that the next scheduled CGA event will be played at Sweetbriar Golf Course in Avon on Sunday, July 18th.

Foss Wins CGA Event at Legends

Mark Foss made it clear that he wanted to win a CGA event to gain an exemption into the 2010 Cleveland Amateur. Now he has his 2010 victory, but he must push on to see if he finishes in the top five on the CGA money list on July 15th, the only exemption available to the CGA.

Foss shot 74 at The Legends of Massillon to earn his first victory on the CGA season, beating Mike Kracker by a shot in a field of just 14 players. Foss currently sits in eighth place on the money list with one event to go before exemptions are determined.

Mintz & Hanley Tie CGA Event at Windmill

Bob Hanley and Michael Mintz tied for first place in the Championship Golf Association’s individual stroke play event at Windmill Lakes Golf Course in Ravenna on Sunday.

Mintz and Hanley tied for first at 5-over par 75, in a field of just 13 players.

Coe Wins CGA Punderson Stroke Play

Scott Coe made six birdies en route to a 2-under par score of 70 to win the Championship Golf Association’s stroke play event at Punderson State Park Golf Course on Saturday by a whopping six shots.

The next event will be an individual stroke play tournament at Windmill Lakes Golf Course in Ravenna on Sunday, June 27th; enter at ChampionshipGolf.org.

Controversy as CGA Shortens Ironwood to 9 Holes

Play was stopped after a significant rainstorm hit the Championship Golf Association’s stroke play event at Ironwood Golf Course on Saturday. After a brief time in the clubhouse, CGA Director Jeff Jenkins called the remainder of the day a washout and decided the event would revert to the nine holes that all players had completed as final.

That decision didn’t sit well with some of the players who were making a charge on the back nine.

Brian Smith of Amherst stated that the event was canceled after just a few minutes into the delay, and that no time was allowed for the rain to stop, the greens to dry and play to resume. Smith pointed to the CGA’s posted rules saying that a delay can remain in effect for up to 60 minutes before a decision is required, but instead the cancellation decision was made inside ten minutes.

Jenkins said in an email that the event was called because the greens had become unplayable, but he noted that “a couple great scores were turned in”.

Norton Brick eagled the ninth hole to get to 1-under par 35 on the day, and in doing so retroactively won the shortened event.

When the back nine was wiped out, Tommy Li won the only skin on the day, as he made the only birdie on the short par-4 third hole.

CGA Cancels Saturday’s Eagle Creek Event

Due to a low number of registrations, Jeff Jenkins has canceled the Championship Golf Association tournament that was to be played this Saturday, May 22 at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Norwalk.

The next scheduled CGA event is a modified stableford points game at the challenging Tanglewood National in Bainbridge on Sunday, May 30th. To enter, visit the CGA website.
