Lower and Schembechler Cruise in Ashland Am-Am

Richie Schembechler of Massillon and Justin Lower of Canal Fulton played solid golf together on Sunday, posting a sterling better ball score of 7-under par 65 on their way to a two shot victory in the 2011 Ashland Am-Am Tournament.

The Columbus team of Mike Kelly and Dirk Maust finished alone in second place at 5-under par 67, two clear of a host of teams at 69.

Thanks to Dan Priest for another well run event and the entire Country Club of Ashland grounds crew for the great golf course conditions!

Ballinger & Kistner Win 2010 Ashland Am-Am

The team of Tom Ballinger and Steve Kistner posted a 5-under par 67 to win the 2010 Ashland Am-Am by one shot on Sunday, edging out three other teams.

[This year marked the 50th playing of this well-respected better ball tournament; see the story on this anniversary and the history of the Am-Am from Thursday's Ashland Times Gazette.]

Ballinger and Kistner overcame tricky hole locations and a course that played long due to soggy conditions from a huge downpour the night before. But the greens were still fairly firm and putted well, so there were birdies to be had as evidenced by the team’s 67.

The pair beat out three veteran teams that tied for second at 4-under par 68: Fred Miller and Larry Lahnan; Josh Anderson and Ben Smith; and Ty Kovach and Allen Freeman.

On a beautiful day and a well-conditioned golf course, the team of John Furlong and Pete Skirptas shot 5-under par 67 in the 2-man better ball format to win the 48th edition of the Ashland Am-Am. That score was good for a one-shot win over four teams.

Skins were made with birdies on holes 8 and 11, and eagles on 5 and 15, each worth $165. Prize amounts listed below are gift certificates for each player in the Ashland pro shop.

Ashland Am-Am Last Call for Entries

The 48th playing of the Ashland Am-Am Tournament takes place this weekend, June 13th and 14th, at the challenging Country Club of Ashland. The deadline for mailed entries for the Ashland Am-Am is the end of day today, so as to begin work on the starting times.

Beginning Tuesday morning, players may reserve a spot in the tournament only by calling the pro shop with a credit card: 419-289-2917. Late entries will be limited to the times left available.

The main event is played on Sunday in scratch 2-man better ball format with an optional cash skins game. PDF entry blank here. Look for starting time information on this website later in the week…

Mike Armour and Dave Trier Post Big Win at ADGA 2-Man Better Ball

The team of Mike Armour and Dave Trier shot a sizzling round of 8-under par 63 to win the ADGA’s 2-player better ball event at Turkeyfoot Golf Links in Akron on Saturday.

An eagle at the par-5 16th and six birdies (including a great birdie at the long par-3 15th) against a lone bogey at the par-3 13th gave the Armour/Trier pair a two shot victory over the team of Ryan Maxwell and Ross Beal.

In fact, the birdie at 15 and eagle at 16 by Trier and Armour were two of the three skins won, giving them a pretty thorough haul for the day.

The next ADGA event will be a 4-man scramble at Brookledge GC in Stow on Saturday, May 16th. To register, visit the ADGA website or call the ADGA voicemail at (440) 848-8364 and leave a message.

- Add this one to the ‘bogus story’ category: rumors that the Country Club of Ashland is in financial distress and may not open for the 2009 season are FALSE.

“I don’t know where these things come from,” sighed Dan Priest, head pro at Ashland. “The club is open, we are still private and expect a great year. The dining room is now open for business to the public, but that has no affect on the club or course. The Ashland Am-Am is on the schedule for June 13-14 and we’re looking forward to it.”

Good news for one of the top Northeast Ohio golf tournaments of the summer…

Teams Oyster & Hahn, Kracker & Mallette Tie for 2008 Ashland Am-Am Better Ball

In windy conditions and battling more than a few tucked pins, the teams of Mike Kracker & Jeff Mallette and John Oyster & John Hahn Jr. tied for the top spot at the 2008 Ashland Am-Am.

Each team posted a 6-under par 66 in the two-player better ball format, a solid score based on the setup and conditions. The next closest pursuers finished two back.

Thanks to Dan Priest and the rest of the Country Club of Ashland staff for the hospitality, food, and great golf course conditions that the players enjoyed over the past two days. Year after year, a great event.
