Dan Marr holes this 16-foot birdie putt on 18 to earn a share of the 2010 ADGA Lazor 2-Man

The teams of Mike Simpson & Dave Oates and Dave Trier & Dan Marr shared top honors in the 2010 ADGA Lazor 2-Man better ball event at Chippewa Golf Club on Saturday.

Each team shot a 6-under par 65, two shots better than the three teams who tied for third at 67.

Using the newly extended back tees on holes 4, 9, 15 and 17 at Chippewa made scoring more difficult than in past years, but the golf course was in true tournament condition.

Going out early, Simpson and Oates shot a solid and bogey-free 33-32 and looked to have clear sailing. But Marr and Trier rallied late, making birdie on four of their last five holes to catch a share of the win.

In the senior division, Rick Merrow and Rick Bryson shot a four-under par 67 to win by a single shot over the teams of Scott Heran & Michael Mintz and Jim Niskanen & Tommy Thompson.

The ADGA’s final event of the season will be the InfoCision Golfer of the Year tournament at the Firestone Country Club West and North Courses on October 2-3. Updated Player of the Year rankings are here for the Junior and Senior divisions.

Lambos put together a solid round of even par 72 on Sunday at the challenging Seven Hills Country Club in Hartville to win the 2010 ADGA Lanning’s 36-Hole Stroke Play Tournament by one shot over Aaron Crewes of Uniontown.

Lambos started the day tied for the lead with defending champion Ross Beal after both players fired a first round 3-under par 69 at Barberton Brookside. With his even par round on Sunday, Lambos finished at the 3-under par total for the 36 holes.

Crewes posted a second consecutive 71 on Sunday to finish in solo second place at 2-under par for the tournament, one behind Lambos and two shots ahead of Beal, Dan Marr, and Darren Phipps, who shared third.

In the Senior Division, Joe Hedrick won by a single shot over Jim Niskanen and Fred Miller.

The ADGA’s next event is the Nick Lazor Two-Man Better Ball on Saturday, July 10th at Chippewa Golf Club in Doylestown.

On an absolutely spectacular Sunday for golf in Northeast Ohio, a pair of teams shared the top spot in the Akron District Golf Association’s 3-Man Shamble at Lake Forest Golf Club in Hudson.

The team of Nick Lambos, Mike Simpson and Kurt Peterson tied for the win with the team of Randy Skorman, Dean Cutlip and Allen Freeman. Both teams finished at 13-under par 131 in the part scramble/part better ball format, where players select the best tee shot and play out individually from there, counting the two best scores for the team.

The team of Dave Oates, Jeff Mallette and Mike Kracker finished alone in third place, one shot back at -12. Jim Cea, John Oyster and Anthony Yacovazzi grabbed fourth place at -10.

Five skins were won on the day, each good for $130: Team Crewse (#3); Team Skorman (#4); Team Harmon (#9); Team Cea (#11); Team Lambos (#14)

The ADGA’s next event is the 36-hole Lannings Stroke Play tournament, on June 26th at Barberton Brookside and June 27th at Seven Hills CC.

On a day with swirling winds that were difficult to gauge, Lambos and Peterson shot 7-under par 64 in the better ball format to best the team of Jeff Mallette and John Oyster by one.

The ADGA goes first this Saturday, May 1st with their Parke H. Thornton 2-M Better Ball event at Turkeyfoot Lake Golf Links in Akron. The entry fee is $80 per player for members, $95 for non-members (year-long membership is $50), and includes the tournament entry, green fees and cart. An optional skins game and team pot is available. Entry deadline is Thursday at 9 p.m.; visit the ADGA website or call 440-848-8364 to register.

Then on Sunday, May 2nd, the CGA plays an individual stroke play event at Chippewa Golf Club in Doylestown. Entry fee is $25 for the pot, $10 for skins plus a one-time $5 membership fee and $5 event fee (there are other membership options, too). To enter, visit the CGA website or call 216-556-0219.

While we have several notable changes for the 2010 season, we’re most proud to be returning to Firestone Country Club for our crown jewel tournament, the InfoCision Golfer of the Year Invitational.

Other key changes for 2010 include:

- Players Membership Program – This addition will help us to bolster tournament payouts and make the ADGA tournament schedule that much more exciting.

- Full Senior Division – This year, each event will showcase a full senior division.  Senior ADGA Members will earn Ungvary Cup points to qualify for the Senior Division of the InfoCision Golfer of the Year Invitational. Senior Division payouts will also be increased to match Regular Division payouts.

- Additional Ungvary Cup Point Opportunities – As added incentive for Akron area golfers to join, ADGA Members will earn Ungvary Cup points by competing in other select non-ADGA events. ADGA Members can use points earned elsewhere to qualify for the InfoCision Golfer of the Year Invitational.

The ADGA is unequaled in its quest for the betterment of amateur golf in the Akron community and continues to refine its tournament schedule, event formats, and payouts to provide its Members with the best competition in the Akron area.

New for 2010:

- Firestone Country Club Hosts Golfer of the Year

- New Membership Structure

- Revised Tournament Schedule with Full Senior Divisions

Back by popular demand: Firestone Country Club! After several years away, the 2010 InfoCision Golfer of the Year Invitational will be conducted at Firestone Country Club.  ADGA Members will have the opportunity to qualify in numerous ways for this premier invitational, including ADGA events and other local tournaments.

This year, the ADGA is offering a Players Membership program. The main purpose of this program is to increase tournament payouts to enhance the excitement of competition. The program costs only $50, but includes the opportunity to earn Ungvary Cup points in non-ADGA events.

Last year, the ADGA Schedule was modified to include some new events. This year is no different. While our traditional match play events have been eliminated, we’ve added Senior Divisions to all of our events. The 2010 schedule now includes four one-day regular season events, in addition to the InfoCision Golfer of the Year Invitational which will be returning to Firestone Country Club.

Also new for 2010, Dr. Jeff Mallette has been granted a spot on the ADGA Board, joining Dave Chapple, Mike Burnett, Kevin Larizza, Dan Marr, Chris Minear, Richard Slivinski and Director Tim Davis.

The ADGA has also restarted the publishing of the Player’s Book, which has been printed and is available at many area golf shops and courses.

Finally, we’ve modified our Tournament Payouts & Point Allocations for 2010. This year, full field payouts will be established and posted prior to the event, and Senior Division payouts will be equivalent to Regular Division payouts (places depends on final field size).

It came down to a playoff not only for the tournament, but for Golfer of the Year honors as well.

Aaron Crewse of Uniontown fired a 3-under par 68 on Sunday in the 2009 Infocision Golfer of the Year Tournament at Portage Country Club to go along with his first round 71 for a 139 total. That total put Crewse into a tie with first round leader Anthony Yacovazzi, who posted two solid rounds of 69-70.

Given the way the points broke down and the fact that both players had fantastic seasons, a sudden death playoff would determine not only the event winner, but who would be the Akron District Golf Association’s Player of the Year for 2009.

Pars halved the first three playoff holes. On the fourth hole, Crewse hit his second shot to 1-foot from the hole, seemingly ending the event. But Yacovazzi followed with a great second shot of his own to six feet. Yacovazzi hit a solid putt that spun out, and Crewse tapped in for the win.

Crewse compiled one of the best seasons ever in Akron District golf: wins at Summit County Amateur, the ADGA Individual Match Play Championship, the Golfer of Year Tournament — and in the process amassed the highest total ever of 1,325 points to win the Governors Cup. 2009 ADGA season results here.
