Scott and Duda Earn an Extreme Victory

by Allen Freeman  |  October 25, 2009   No Comments

Pine Hills GC, HinckleyHost pro Jacob Scott played solid tee-to-green while amateur partner Derek “D2″ Duda provided some critical lag putting to earn themselves a one shot victory in the inaugural Pine Hills Extreme 2-Man Scramble Sunday.

With the hole locations set on severe slopes and tucked into tiny corners, the day was as much about making pars as converting birdies. Scott and Duda overcame a double-bogey seven on the par-5 fifth hole by making birdies on holes 7-8-9 followed by an eagle on the par-5 10th. They birdied the 13th and then parred out from there to grab the first place prize of $1200, winning by a single shot over the teams of Bob Sylvester & Chris Zidek and Mike Armour & Dave Trier.

FIELD SHOT: The team of Denny Krysh and Mike Watkins holed out from the fairway on the first hole for eagle to earn one of four skins made on the day.

2009 Greater Cleveland Skins Game Champion Steve Blackburn Jr. with Mike Angie and the Thompson Cup

Greater Cleveland Skins GameSteve Blackburn Jr. of Willowick made it two years in a row, as he won The Greater Cleveland Skins Game Championship on a cold rainy night Thursday at Powderhorn Golf Course in Madison.

Paired together for the final round, Blackburn Jr. was in a tight race with Mike Angie, who was on top of the leaderboard for most of the year. But with a birdie skin at the short par four 13th hole ($153.33) and the pin shot on the 14th ($70), Blackburn pulled away for the season-long win, as Angie was shut out on the final night.

Blackburn Jr. set a new Greater Cleveland Skins Game money record with $1,622.32 for the 26 week season, while Angie finished a fine year with a hefty $1,331.58. Third place was nearly $600 behind that.  [Read more →]

Team Stone Wins Toughened Oak Harbor 6-Man

by Allen Freeman  |  October 11, 2009   No Comments

The team of pro Mike Stone, Don Paulsen, Adam Crisp, Dan McIntyre, Clent Schreber and Dave Horn shot a strong 18-under par 54 to win the 2009 Oak Harbor 6-Man Scramble on Saturday by one shot.

The event had a new tournament director in pro Matt Jennings, and with it some new and tougher pin locations; those new locations definitely made for an additional challenge that was reflected in the winning score. But the course was in great shape even with the recent rains, and the break in the weather made for an enjoyable tournament.

No skins were won outright on the day. Results follow of teams that finished “in the money” (with team captain listed):

1st – Mike Stone  score 54, -18
T2 – Chris Fussel score 55, -17
T2 – Jeremy Lopez score 55, -17
T4 – Andrew Palmer score 56, -16
T4 – Brian Gerken score 56, -16
T4 – Dave Gibson score 56, -16
T4 – Jeff Godzak score 56, -16
T4 – Joel Schlageter score 56, -16
