Public & Private Teams Tie at 2009 Shaw Cup
by Allen Freeman | September 20, 2009 No Comments
Coming out of day one, the public and private teams playing at the Shaw Cup had each earned 7 points in better ball and alternate shot at Rosemont. Sunday’s individual matches at Good Park ended the same way, too, with a 14-14 tie giving the private team the Shaw Cup as the defending champion. Plain Dealer story here.
Greater Cleveland Skins Game: Week 22
by John Niedzialek | September 18, 2009 No Comments
Steve Blackburn Jr. and Mike Angie continue their back-and-forth battle for the Greater Cleveland Skins Game’s Thompson Cup, and they are pulling away from the pack.
Blackburn Jr. captured two skins at Wicked Woods on Thursday with birdies on the par-4 10th hole and a long-putt deuce on the par-3 14th hole.
But Angie responded with a chip-in birdie on the 11th hole and a pin shot on the 15th hole. So Blackburn Jr. closed the gap, but Angie is still the leader — but by a mere $129 with just four weeks to go in the season. [Read more →]

Get Ready for the 2009 Fall Scramble Season!
by Allen Freeman | September 15, 2009 No Comments
Much of the rest of the 2009 competitive golf season is “all scrambles all the time”. Let’s take a look at some of the biggies coming up on the schedule from now until November 1 — and remember to get those entry blanks in right away:
- Cleveland Metroparks Golf Division will host the first of their “Fall Tour” scrambles on Saturday, September 26, starting with a 2-M Scramble at Big Met in Fairview Park (entry blank is due this coming Sunday, 9/20). That event is followed by the Metropark’s Barbour Cup at Sleepy Hollow on October 10, and the Manakiki 3-M Scramble October 17th. Entry blanks for all Metroparks Fall Golf events here.
- Turkeyfoot Golf Links in Akron will host their big annual 27-hole Jumble on Saturday, October 3rd, with tee times starting at 8 a.m. This 2-Man amateur-only event features 9-holes scramble, 9-holes better ball, and 9-holes true alternate shot. Cost is $115 per player to cover golf, cart, skins and overall tournament prizes ($800 for first place!, $600 2nd, $480 3rd, $380 4th, $280 5th, $180 6th based on just 30 teams). Plus an optional game of $10 per player per nine for low scores within each 9-hole format. The greens are in great shape, so it should be a ball! To enter, call Turkeyfoot at 330-644-5971 or email Timdavisgolf@aol.com.
- Sawmill Creek Golf Course in Huron is putting together a huge 4-Man Cash Scramble for Sunday, October 4th, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. Teams of 4 ams or 1 pro / 3 ams will play for big prizes in a “fast play format” that should keep the pace moving — something that’s not always the case in fall scramble golf. Complete details from the Sawmill Scramble story posted previously here.
- Blonde John (John Niedzialek) will host two 3-Man cash scrambles this fall: October 3rd at Powderhorn in Madison, and October 24th at Thunder Hill in Madison. 1 pro and 2 ams or 3 ams, $80 entry fee per player. Detailed entry blank for both Blonde John dates here.
- Oak Harbor Golf Club hosts its long-running 6-Man Scramble on Saturday, October 10th with a 9 a.m. shotgun. Entry fee is $75 per player for golf, cart, food and event prizes (first place is $3,000!), with an optional skins game available. This event is long-running because they do a great job with a big bang for the buck, so it usually fills up, too. Get your team entry in quickly; Oak Harbor entry blank here.
- Eagle Creek Golf Club in Norwalk is hosting the second playing of its 6-Man Fall Scramble on Sunday, October 18th. Teams have been signing up most of the summer in their pro shop (unfortunately without preference or notice to last year’s teams), so it’s not clear whether space is still available and you might be put on a waiting list. Call the pro shop at 419-668-8535 for details.
Scrambles aren’t the only events in the next two months. SCAGA will hold their Invitational at Glenmoor Country Club, and the Championship Golf Association has events at Highland and Little Mountain.
Remember, complete details on every competitive golf event in Northeast Ohio can always be found in the Tournament Calendar!
