Mallette & Kracker “Steak” Win: Chippewa Scratch Week 11
by Allen Freeman | July 21, 2009 No Comments
The team of Jeff Mallette and Mike Kracker sprinted to a two shot win in the first Cash/Steak Night of the 2009 Chippewa Scratch League season at Rosemont CC in Fairlawn.
The pair posted a 3-under par score for the 12-hole night that featured 3 holes of scramble, 3 holes better ball, 3 holes aggregate and 3 holes true alternate shot.
The big carry-over skins pot was spread around, as five different teams dipped in. So no major jumps were made on the 2009 season-long money list, outside of Mallette/Kracker sliding into T6.

Timmons Solid in Cleveland Senior Am Victory
by Allen Freeman | July 18, 2009 3 Comments

Matt Timmons of Chagrin Falls played solid, steady golf in Saturday’s second round of the 2009 Greater Cleveland Senior Amateur Championship at Big Met GC. He birdied the holes the winner is expected to birdie, he limited his second round bogeys to just two, and he made the putts he needed to make to win the championship.
Timmons started the day three shots back at even par, but posted one of only two sub-par rounds on the day to cruise to an unlikely three shot victory.
At the turn in Saturday’s final round, the field was bunched with a number of players sitting at even and 1-under par. But while the other players in contention made mistakes or missed putts, Timmon’s finished strong with birdies on holes 13 and 17 (offsetting a bogey on the long par-3 12th) to post a second round score of 70. Timmons finished at 2-under par 142 for the event.
In the Age 60-70 Division, Tom Flanigan beat Joe Weidner in a playoff after finishing at 151, while Jim Rockow handily won the 70+ age bracket at 153.
The top five players and ties earned exemptions into the 2009 Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship at Sleepy Hollow GC in Brecksville in three weeks.

Greater Cleveland Skins Game: Week 13
by John Niedzialek | July 16, 2009 No Comments
Mike Angie rocketed to the top of the Greater Cleveland Skins Game leaderboard on Thursday at Quail Hollow by capturing the entire skins pot and a pin shot!
Every hole at Quail Hollow’s Weiskopf Course was birdied Thursday by the 20 players participating, but Angie’s solo birdies on the par-4 4th hole and the par-3 7th hole held up, giving him both skins for the night. Angie also took the pin shot on the 7th hole.
Angie’s big night netted him a cool $450 and put him a few dollars up in the season-long lead and the chase for the Thompson Cup. Steve Blackburn Jr. had a comfortable lead going into the night, but that changed with Angie’s sweep.
The other pin shot winners were Gary Zehe on the 5th, Sam Corabi on the 2nd, and Jarrod Dixon on the 9th, worth $50 each.
Next week, the Greater Cleveland Skins Game moves to a new venue: Madison Country Club, staring at 5pm. A special $25.00 greens fee will be featured; should be a great evening.
Finally, players are reminded that in order to participate in the “prize enhanced” Greater Cleveland Shoot-Out stroke play tournament on Labor Day Monday, they must participate in five of the weekly skins game events this season. (Past Champions must play in three or more events.) Plan your attendance now to avoid getting shut out!

Durbin & Bishop Roll: Chippewa Scratch Week 10
by Allen Freeman | July 14, 2009 No Comments
The team of Chris Durbin and Shane Bishop rolled to a three shot win over a host of second place finishers at the Chippewa Scratch League on Monday, posting a smooth 5-under par 30 in a back-nine scramble format.
Their victory helps the team close the gap in the season-long money race; the pair held the lead for several weeks after a huge early skin, but Danny Marr’s hole-out eagle two weeks ago helped him and Mike Armour to the top of the leaderboard. Durbin and Bishop hold down the T-3 spot, and are inching closer.
No skins were won on the evening, and that means a big carry-over for the Steak Night / Cash Night next Monday at Rosemont! Details on next Monday’s festivities here. Should make for even more drama at the jumble…

Greater Cleveland Skins Game: Week 12 Results
by John Niedzialek | July 10, 2009 No Comments
“Double Down Thursday” at the Greater Cleveland Skins game provided an early Christmas present to the Blackburn family: Steve Jr. and Steve Sr. captured the entire skins pot, with each skin worth $322.
The stakes were doubled at this midseason event. Steve Sr. birdied the difficult par-4 10th hole at ThunderHill, while Steve Jr. had his birdie hold up at the easy par-5 12th hole.
After the round, the competitive Steve Sr. remarked, “My son has a lot of talent, but a lot more luck.”
Tom Evans won the pin shot on the 11th hole, and Brian McCullough captured the pin shot on the 16th hole. Pin shots were worth $98 each.
The big payday for Steve Blackburn Sr. rocketed him into the top 5 of the Greater Cleveland Skins Game and earned him an exemption into this year’s Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship, to be held in August at Sleepy Hollow in Brecksville. Steve Jr.’s big night extended his lead at the top of the 2009 Leaderboard.
The top five players from the 2009 mid-season leaderboard who earned exemptions into the Cleveland Am are: Steve Backburn Jr.; Eddie Neer; Mike Angie; Steve Blackburn Sr.; George Martin. (Martin edged out Joe Tasca by 16 cents on the leaderboard to gain the final spot!)
Next week Thursday, the Greater Cleveland Skins Game travels to Quail Hollow at 5p.m., at a $25 green fee rate. All amateur players are welcome to participate. See the remainder of the 2009 Cleveland Skins Game schedule here.
