Beal Goes Low to Win Second Straight ADGA Medal Play Championship

by Tim Davis  |  May 31, 2009   No Comments

ADGADefending champion Ross Beal of Uniontown overpowered Barberton Brookside with a bogey free 8-under par 64 on Sunday, and ran away with a seven-shot victory at the ADGA’s Medal Play Championship.

Beal carded four birdies and two eagles on Sunday for a two-day 36-hole total of 9-under par 135, easily winning the title for the second straight year.

Beal’s first eagle on Sunday came when he drove the dogleg left 325-yard third hole and sank the putt. His second eagle came on the 340-yard 16th hole when Ross sent is approach shot past the pin, spinning the ball back into the hole for a field shot.

Aaron Crewse finish in second place with a fine 2-under par 70 for a two day total of 142. Also of note, Bob Goulish had a hole-in-one for a skin on Saturday at Seven Hills.

Greater Cleveland Skins Game: Week 6 Results

by John Niedzialek  |  May 28, 2009   No Comments

Greater Cleveland Skins GameA field of just eight players found an opening between rain storms Thursday at Chardon Lakes to complete Week 6 of the 2009 Greater Cleveland Skins Game.

John Niedzialek of Concord, last year’s season-long runner-up, took both pin shots and won a skin on the 200-yard par-3 14th hole by draining his 10 foot putt for birdie. Niedzialek took home $148 on the night and moves up to fourth place in the chase for the Thompson Cup.

Eddie Neer continued his strong play, capturing the other skin on the par-5 17th hole. Skins were worth $92 each and pin shots paid $28 each.

Next week, the Greater Cleveland Skins Game moves to Pleasant Hills near Chardon starting at 4:30 pm where the greens are always in nice shape and the birdies should be flying.

Players are reminded that the top 5 on the leaderboard at mid-season will qualify for this year’s Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship, to be held at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Brecksville in August.

Also, one of Ohio’s best paying one-day events for amateurs, The Greater Cleveland Shoot-Out, again will be held on Labor Day this year. Remember, players must participate in five or more Thursday events to be eligible to enter, or be a past Champion and play in 3 or more Thursday events.

3-Way for 3-Man NEOHgolf.com / Blond John Thunder Hill Scramble

by Allen Freeman  |  May 24, 2009   4 Comments

Three teams tied at the top at 12-under par in the Blond John / Northeast Ohio Golf Thunder Hill 3-Man Scramble on Saturday.

But the big winners on the day were Aaron Czetli, Mike Simpson and Danny Sattl, as they nabbed one of those top places and one of the two skins on the day. Complete results below.

While it was a beautiful day for golf and the reduced greens fees offered by Thunder Hill for the tournament are most appreciated, the 7-hour pace and the bumpy greens are two issues that must be addressed. Northeast Ohio Golf will ensure future tournaments bearing its name meet competitive standards for the tournament players it serves.

Greater Cleveland Skins Game: Week 5 Results

by John Niedzialek  |  May 21, 2009   No Comments

Greater Cleveland Skins GameIt was a night of the “double-dips” as 21 players competed at Quail Hollow Golf Club’s Devlin Course this Thursday in the Greater Cleveland Skins Game.

2008 Champion Steve Blackburn Jr. of Willowick moved to the top of this year’s leaderboard with a four birdie night, capturing a skin and a pin shot with a double-dip on the 155-yard par-3 fourth hole.

George Martin of Twinsburg made his 2009 Skins Game debut at Quail a worthwhile one, as he also double-dipped by picking up a skin with an eagle on the par-5 5th hole, and a pin shot on the par-3 ninth.

Finally, Joe Tasca of Concord picked up the last skin and pin shot combo on the 165-yard par-3 6th hole.

Each skin earned $157.50, while the pin shots were worth $52.50. Thus Blackburn Jr., Martin, and Tasca each took home $210 on the night.

Thanks to Quail Hollow Head Pro Olle Karlstrom and member Nick Cerri for hosting the Greater Cleveland Skins Game players at Quail Hollow.

Also, a schedule update was announced today, as the beautiful Madison Country Club has been added to the the Greater Cleveland Skins Game schedule for July 23, with a $25.00 greens fee rate.

Next Thursday, May 28th, the Skins game moves to Chardon Lakes Golf Course starting at 5 p.m. All amateur players are welcome.
