Chippewa Scratch League – Week 19 Results FINAL
by Allen Freeman | September 30, 2008 No Comments
The team of Brad Stewart and Don Olney put together a strong 4-under par 32 better ball score on the front nine of Chippewa Monday. But by not putting their hands into their pockets before teeing off, they cost themselves $200!
Stewart and Olney won the final league night of the season by a single shot over two teams. But they missed out on collecting the Pro Pot, as the team did not enter – saving themselves $10 each.
Sam Spino and Dave Oates took the season-long crown, each winning over $1,600 on the year; congratulations to the pair on a great season. Final 2008 standings for the Chippewa Scratch League are posted here.
The $100 Monday Big Skins Game at 11:30 and a 9-hole scratch game to follow will still be played at Chippewa so long as the weather remains reasonable. Players looking for a little October golf should continue to come out to Chippewa on Mondays…

Ty Kovach and Allen Freeman Stumble, Bumble Then Eagle Their Way to a Jumble Win
by Allen Freeman | September 28, 2008 No Comments
The team of Ty Kovach of Medina and Allen Freeman of Brecksville went from playing great to making huge mistakes to playing great again in winning the Turkeyfoot Jumble on Saturday.
In the end, it was the last four holes in the alternate shot format that made all the difference.
After leading the front nine scramble scoring with a strong 5-under par 31, Kovach and Freeman reached 9-under par on the day through 17 holes, as Kovach went on a three-birdies-in-a-row run in the better ball format on holes 14 through 16.
But a series of bad shots by Kovach had him out of the hole on 18, and Freeman’s third shot from 156 yards out hit an inexplicable piece of asphalt that sits just a few feet off the left side of the 18th green and went out of bounds long. The team ended up with a triple-bogey 8 on the hole.
To make matters worse, the pair then made a double-bogey 5 on the 98-yard par-3 20th hole in alternate shot, after Freeman’s tee shot hit the front ledge and spun all the way back down the slope.
After pars on the next three holes, the team caught fire again: back-to-back eagles on the drivable par-4s at the 24th and 25th holes, followed by a birdie at the last. The strong finish salvaged the day for the pair and gave them a 3-shot victory over two teams.
The other big winners on the day were Mark Foss and Steve Blackburn, Jr., who tied for second place overall and made two high-paying skins, including the entire skins pot from the Better Ball format with a birdie on the par-3 13th.
Special thanks to Tim Davis for organizing the event and drawing a great field, and kudos to the staff of Turkeyfoot for the well-conditioned golf course. As always, a great annual fall event.

Chippewa Scratch League – Week 17 Results
by Allen Freeman | September 16, 2008 No Comments
It was Cash & Steak Night at Rosemont Country Club on Monday, but the change in venue made little difference in the result: the year belongs to Dave Oates and Sam Spino.
Oates and Spino won the 12-hole jumble with a score of 2-under par 56, sliding past Doug Van Nostram and Kurt Peterson by one shot.
In addition to the win, Oates and Spino grabbed one of three skins made on the evening with a birdie on the third hole, good for another $186.
With the win and the skin, Oates and Spino are now nearly $700 up — each — on third place on the season-long money list, updated here. A pretty safe lead, undoubtedly.
There are still two more weeks in the Scratch League season, and the $100 Big Skins Game is going strong at 11:30 a.m. every Monday. The remaining September Mondays at Chippewa will be a great way to close the season…
Week 17 – 9/15/08: 12-Hole Jumble at Rosemont CC

Greater Cleveland Skins Game: Week 22 Results
by John Niedzialek | September 11, 2008 No Comments
Seven birdies were recorded at Powderhorn GC in Madison on Thursday — and all seven held up as skins!
Mike Angie had the most fun, coming out of the gate and sinking a 40-foot downhill putt on the long par-4 10th hole. Mike also birdied the par-5 16th hole and took home the pin shot on #14. Skins were worth $36.14 and the pin shots were worth $38.50, so Angie earned $110.78.
Geoff Nicely birdied the 12th hole, Mark Foss birdied 13, and Paul Kish birdied 15. Tom Evans stuck it close on the par-3 17th hole and made the putt for birdie to capture both the pin shot and skin on that hole. And finally, John Niedzialek made a skin on the 18th hole with a birdie.
Steve Blackburn Jr. took the week off but still holds onto the lead of the Greater Cleveland Skin Game in quest of the “Thompson Cup.”
Only six more weeks to play culminating in the “Double Down” event at Pleasant Hills on October 23, and the “Thompson Cup” trophy presentation.
The Skins Game moves to Fowlers Mill next Thursday, September 18 starting at 5:00pm sharp due to daylight concerns. Green Fees will be $22.00 riding, which includes a beverage. by Allen Freeman | September 10, 2008 No Comments
It’s Northeast Ohio’s version of golf’s silly season! The PGA Tour waits until November and December to unleash all kinds of team formats and skins games, but Greater Clevelanders don’t have the luxury of 70 degree days a week before Christmas. So September and October will have to do!
- Monday, September 15th, the $100 Skins Game and Chippewa Scratch League move to Rosemont. The Skins Game will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the 12-hole Scratch League Steak Night / Jumble will begin at 3 p.m.;
- the Cleveland Metroparks will have its Fall 2-player Scramble/BB at Shawnee Hills GC in Bedford Heights on September 20th as well, details here;
- the Championship Golf Association will stage its $40 Big Skins Blowout at The Fairways of North Canton on Sunday, September 21, details at championshipgolf.org;
- Turkeyfoot Lake Golf Links in Akron will host their 27-hole 2-Man Jumble on Saturday, September 27th; details here;
Plus there are even more scrambles coming up in October! Check the Tournament Calendar for details…

Chippewa Scratch League – Week 16 Results
by Allen Freeman | September 9, 2008 No Comments
2008 Chippewa Club Champ Dr. Jeff Mallette brought sub John Oyster to Chippewa on Monday and introduced him to the top of the leaderboard and a pocket full of skins money.
Mallette and Oyster posted a 3-under par 33 to win by two shots in the better ball format on the back nine, including a carry-over birdie skin on the par-3 17th.
A host of teams tied for second at 1-under par 35.
The team of Sam Spino and Dave Oates was one of those T2 finishers, and they also nabbed a skin with a birdie on 16 to further pad their lead on the season-long money list, updated here.
Next week, the Chippewa Scratch League heads to Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn for the final Cash / Steak Night of the season. As always, the format will be a 12-hole Jumble (three holes each of scramble, better ball, aggregate and alternate shot).
SCHEDULING NOTE: The $100 Big Skins Game also will be held at Rosemont next Monday, but with tee times beginning at 10:30 a.m. so that there is plenty of daylight to complete the 12 holes of league play.

Beal, Hedrick Tie 2008 ADGA Open
by Allen Freeman | September 8, 2008 No Comments
On a cool and drizzly day, Joe Hedrick of Barberton and Ross Beal of Uniontown each shot even-par 72 to tie for the victory in the ADGA Open stroke play event at Raintree Country Club on Sunday.
Hedrick played a steady round of 36-36, while Beal made a nice comeback on the final nine with a 2-under par 34. The pair nipped Tony Serra, Jim Cea and Chris Okeson by a shot.
The win is Beal’s second of the ADGA season, and Hedrick’s first. But Hedrick has been on a roll, as he won last week’s Turkeyfoot club championship by five shots.
Hedrick, who also won the Senior Division by two shots, would have won the event outright except for a missed tap-in from about 6 inches while trying to reach over a player’s line. (Ah, golf.)
An announcement on the date of the ADGA Golfer of the Year will be made available soon; watch NEOHgolf.com and ADGAgolf.com for details on this final ADGA event of the season.

by John Niedzialek | September 5, 2008 No Comments
John Niedzialek and Joe Tasca, both of Concord, made the most of their trip south to Chardon Lakes for the Greater Cleveland Skins Game on Thursday.
Niedzialek had two skins with birdies on the par-4 third and seventh holes, worth $84.33 each.
Joe Tasca took the pin shot on the par-3 fourth hole (worth $38.50) and then made the putt for birdie for the other skin.
Dan Lanese had the other pin shot on #8. (Dan made the putt as well but was tied by a bomb putt by Steve Blackburn Jr.)
With his two skins, Niedzialek passes Mark Foss on the leaderboard for second place in the standings. Leader Steve Blackburn Jr. made 3 birdies on Thursday, but was shut out again.
For the first time in Greater Cleveland Skins game history, three players have now moved over the $1,000 mark for the season.
The Skins Game moves to Powderhorn GC in Madison on Thursday, September 11 starting at 5:00 pm. Green Fees will be $13.00 riding and $6.00 walking! Please thank the course for extending these great rates to our players. Any players looking for a “warm up 9 hole round” before the scheduled skins game must call the course first to make such arrangements.
Only six more weeks to play before the season-finale “Double Down” event at Pleasant Hills GC on October 23, and the “Thompson Cup” trophy presentation. Who will buy the champagne this year? It’s still up for grabs!

Ryan Stefanski is Last Man Standing in 2008 Cleveland Shoot-Out
by Allen Freeman | September 2, 2008 No Comments
It wasn’t always pretty and the winning score was 38-38=76, but even in pain Ryan Stefanski of Brunswick got the job done.
Stefanski endured pain from a kidney stone on the 16th hole, waited on the 18th tee bent over and clutching his side, yet somehow finished the round spectacularly, playing the last three holes in 1-under par to win the 2008 Cleveland Shoot-Out at Fowlers Mill.
Stefanski outlasted two players who finished at 78: defending champion Steve Blackburn Jr. of Willowick and Joe Tasca of Concord.
Corey Iacofano of Painesville, Clint Paxson of Ashtabula, and Tom Evans of Perry each shot 79 to tie for fourth.
While the field included a number of very talented players, the setup of the hazard-filled course was a “big number waiting to happen”. In addition to Pete Dye’s highly challenging Fowlers Mill layout, the slow wet greens, a number of truly difficult hole locations, and a 10-12 mph wind elevated the scores for the entire field.
The players in this event qualified by participating at least twice in the traveling Greater Cleveland Skins Game, which still has several events this season [2008 schedule here]. These weekly skins-only events are open to all amateur players, and new players are always welcome.
